Tourism as a Trade - Studying with a Visual Mnemonic
Understand the topic, but remember it too
Understanding a topic is important.
But is understanding sufficient?
To do well in exams, you should also be able to remember the topic and write it in your exam too.
Not just exams, but remembering these topics can be useful in your future academics, or competitive exams such as the Civil Services exams (IAS), or simply when having a discussion with your friends or parents.
Visual mnemonics helps you remember more information with less effort
Visual mnemonics is a memory technique that helps you remember more lessons with less effort.
While reading engages only your verbal memory, visual mnemonics engage your verbal, visual, and spatial memory leading to better retention.
Visual mnemonics are not supporting pictures. Rather, they encode information in ways that make them memorable.
Tourism as a Trade
Ch. 7 Lifelines of National Economy - Geography
This topic talks about the features of tourism and its contribution to our economy.
Let’s go through this topic.
But first of all, let’s establish a theme for our mnemonic.
Using a visual mnemonic to understand and remember this topic
The theme for our mnemonic is this exciting tourist fair in this large, open ground.
There are shops, traditional folk singing and dancing is underway, and many tourists have gathered to enjoy these activities.
Now that we have a theme for our mnemonic, let’s examine the points in this topic.
1.
Tourism is considered a trade as it involves the buying and selling of services and goods at a local, state, national and international level.
Imagine a family from the USA coming for a holiday in India. First, they may book their flight tickets to India ✈️ with an American airlines company (international services). They may book part of their domestic travel with a luxury train run by Indian Railways 🚞 (national services). When staying in their hotel 🏨 they will use additional services like food, ayurvedic spas or hire a tourist guide and a driver 🚗 (local services). They may purchase some local clothes 👗, handicrafts or souvenirs 🎁 (local goods). And so on.
Drawing the Point as a Visual Mnemonic Cue
Now imagine we have to draw something that can remind us of this point.
How would you draw “buying and selling”?
We could draw a shop for that – a souvenir shop in the trade fair.
There is one more keyword in this point – “local, state, national and international level”.
The tourist map in the shop is a cue for this point as it shows India (national) and Rajasthan (state).
This is the cue for our first point.
2.
Tourism in India has grown substantially over the last three decades now employing 15 million people.
Since our liberalisation in 1991, Tourism, like many other industries, has grown at a rapid pace. The chart below shows the international tourist arrivals in India from 1990 till 2019.
How to draw this point
To draw this point, we could imagine Tourism as a person. He has grown substantially for the past three decades. So we could show him as an overgrown man (because he has grown substantially) who’s celebrating his 30th birthday (3 decades).
The banner with “15 million” written on it is a cue for Tourism employing 15 million people.
3.
Tourism promotes national integration, provides support to local handicrafts and cultural pursuits.
Sometimes we don’t like someone, because we don’t know them well. Talking to them, knowing about their families, their culture and traditions help us appreciate them and become friends with them.
Similarly tourism helps us understand people in different parts of our country and realise that we are not that different from each other. We have so much in common in food, music, clothes, customs and traditions as well as a shared history.
How to draw this point
To draw this point we could have two men – one from North India and one from South India, showing their friendship.
To show “local handicrafts” we can have this granny selling a local, handcrafted replica of the Hawa Mahal.
To draw “cultural pursuits” we can have these dancers and musicians performing here.
4.
It also helps in the development of international understanding about our culture and heritage. Foreign tourists visit India for heritage, eco, adventure, cultural, medical and business tourism.
People from all over the world come to India and learn about our rich history, culture and traditions.
How to draw this point
To draw this point, we can have several international tourists visiting this fair.
The tourists who have arrived in this tourist bus represent several of the types of tourism mentioned. The Japanese tourist is here for heritage and cultural tourism, the lady with the crutch for medical tourism, the man with the briefcase for business tourism, while the family admiring the elephant is here for eco and adventure tourism.
5.
Tourism has vast potential and efforts are being made to promote different types of tourism.
India’s rich history and traditions are of immense interest to international tourists. However the lack of adequate roads and world-class amenities has prevented us from realising the full potential of Tourism in India.
How to draw this point
There are many ways to draw this point. However we also need to ensure that it should blend in with the rest of our mnemonic. Now that we have drawn a tourist fair, we could draw a film crew creating a movie here. This movie can be used to promote tourism in cinema theatres or on YouTube or Instagram. Don’t you think?
Conclusion
This completes our topic and the visual mnemonic.
Here is the visual mnemonic once again, for your reference.
Practice studying with the mnemonic. It will help you remember better compared to other methods of study such as studying with videos or books.
Homi wishes you all the best for your academics!
