What is decentralisation? What is the idea behind decentralisation?
Decentralisation is when power is taken away from central and state governments and given to local governments.
The idea behind decentralisation:
- Local people understand the problems of the local people. i.e. where to spend money on developmental issues, welfare issues etc.
- India is a diverse country with multi-linguistic aspects, varied cultures, and different ethnic groups.
- Common citizens can be involved in the decision-making process concerning their problems easily and quickly.
- Different sizes of the states further warrants decentralisation.
- Local government at a grassroots level ensures stability, strength, and improves the health of democracy.
