Learning Theories

Learning theories suggest models about how students understand, absorb and retain information. These theories help teachers develop strategies that are tailored to their learners’ needs to drive favourable results.

The Concept

Building effective learning experiences are possible only when we understand how different environments, behaviours, rewards, punishments, etc. affect learners.

1.Behaviourism

All behaviour are learnt through conditioning and our interaction with our environment.

2.Cognitivism

It emphasizes the role of mental processes and that learning occurs through the acquisition, organization, and storage of knowledge.

3.Constructivism

Learners are not passive; they are active participants in learning and construct knowledge.

4.Connectivism

Digital Technologies connect us together and give rise to new learning environment, opportunities, and networks.

5.Experiential Learning

We learn by experiencing things within our environment.

6.Transformative Learning

An extension of “Constructivism”. New learning experiences can drastically change a learner’s perspective and push them to accept a different world view.

7.Social Learning Theory

We can learn from each other through observation and imitation.

As someone new to Educational Psychology, I made this homigram where I’ve visually represented some famous learning theories that I personally found interesting. These visuals help me instantly remember a synopsis of each theory.
