Day 6 of Spanish Vocabulary: Palabras de Cortesía (Parte 2)

Building on the polite expressions we learned yesterday, today we’ll expand our vocabulary of useful courtesy phrases in Spanish. Having a range of these at your disposal will help you navigate conversations smoothly and respectfully.

If you’re learning Spanish vocabulary, you must learn different courtesy words, shouldn’t you? So, let’s take a look at what we have for today!

Palabras (words)
Significados (meanings)

¿Perdón?
peyr-don (‘d’ has a soft sound)

Sorry?
¡De acuerdo!
day aa-coo-eyr-do (‘d’ has a soft sound)
OK!
Por favor
pour faa-vore
Please
No entiendo
no eyn-tee-eyn-do (‘t’ and ‘d’ have a soft sound)
I don’t understand
Perdone
peyr-dawnay (‘d’ has a soft sound)
Excuse me

Disculpe / ¡Discúlpeme!

/ ¡Perdóneme! are also used to say ‘excuse me’.

Discúlpeme & Perdóneme are more polite and formal ways of saying excuse me.

Notes to remember:

  • ¿Cómo? and ¿Qué? can also be used to ask for clarification like “Pardon?”
  • De acuerdo can also mean “I agree” more neutrally
  • Por favor often gets attached to requests, but can be used independently too. Example:  ¿Puedes hablar más despacio, por favor? (Can you speak slower, please?)

To check your mastery, let’s practice using these phrases:

  1. You didn’t hear what someone said. You reply: “______” (Sorry?).
  2. Someone asks if you understand and you don’t. You say: “______” (I don’t understand).
  3. You need to politely get someone’s attention. You say: “______” (Excuse me).
  4. You agree to a suggestion. You respond: “______” (Ok! / I agree)
  5. You ask someone politely to repeat something: “______, repeat slowly” (Please).

Check your answers!

  1. Perdón
  2. No entiendo
  3. Perdone / Disculpe / Discúlpeme / Perdóneme
  4. ¡De acuerdo!
  5. Por favor

With these additional courtesy phrases, you’re better equipped to politely ask for clarification, make requests, and keep the conversation flowing smoothly en español.

Well, can you imagine we’re only at day 6 and you have learnt all these spanish vocabulary lists!
